2006-02-24

Official Course language: English.
Aims:
When one of us (MPP), over 30 years ago, organized the Royaumont debate between Noam Chomsky and Jean Piaget, cognitive science was still in its infancy, to the point that the very label “cognitive science” had not yet come to be adopted as the standard for the field. The developments, both qualitative and quantitative, that we have witnessed in the meantime are such that it’s perhaps time now to try to draw some balances, not of cognitive science as a whole (an inordinately ambitious task) but of some of its central components. A critical re-examination of what we think we know, and of what we would like to know, about language, mind and brain looks especially promising. It’s a domain at the same time wide enough to be of appeal to a variety of cognitive scientists and specific enough to allow for deep insights and hopefully a novel synthesis bridging different disciplines and different approaches. The special “formula” adopted in this colloquium is to convene some of the leading researchers in linguistics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, cognitive neuroscience, comparative cognitive psychology and evolutionary biology around Noam Chomsky, the very special guest of this encounter. He said that he welcomes this opportunity to exchange ideas, compare hypotheses, re-examine new and old data and also (in his own words) “learn a lot” about recent developments in fields bordering his own. A series of compact communications will be followed by a debate, there will be, moreover round tables and, in the evening, conferences aimed at a wider public.
In collaboration with Department of Education of the Basque Government.
